Two Drexel hoop players in trouble with the law

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Drexel University has placed three male students, including basketball players Jamie Harris and Kevin Phillip, on interim suspension pending the outcome of a police investigation into a robbery on July 21.

The school's Department of Public Safety is fully cooperating with the Philadelphia Police Department's investigation into the incident.

Both players surrendered on Monday and are facing robbery and weapons charges after allegedly burglarizing a student's apartment last week.

A warrant had been put out for the pairs' arrest over the weekend after they allegedly pointed a gun at a female student Wednesday night. Philadelphia police indicated the duo was searching for money but instead left with two cell phones.

Devon Bond, the third Drexel student, was arrested last Thursday and was believed to have hatched the plot thinking there would be money available in the residence. He was eventually tracked down after using a credit card in a pizzeria located on the ground floor of University Crossings, as student housing property, while waiting to go upstairs to the residence.

Bond was eventually buzzed inside the building by the female victim, and her male roommate, and talked with them about their "experiences" at the school and "their education," according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Upon leaving, Bond propped the door open with a newspaper and returned shortly thereafter with the two players, who were brandishing handguns. One of the players forced Bond to the ground to make it appear as if he was being targeted in the robbery, as well.

Harris was the team's point guard and leading scorer last season, averaging 14.5 points per game and 3.4 assists per contest as he played in all 32 of the Dragons' games. His lawyer has denied the allegations.

Phillip played in 31 games last season and averaged 2.9 points and 3.1 rebounds.

The players' apartments were searched but the weapons allegedly used in the crime have not been found.

Lt. John Walker, of Southwest Detectives, when asked why the senior-to-be Harris would do something like this, responded by saying "that's the answer we may never know" to the Inquirer.
